How to use a FTP
application ?
We have placed this
here for our clients and those who are new to FTP and how to use it. FTP stands
for " File Transfer Protocol" and is the preffered way to upload your webpages
and site content.
When you need to upload files from your computer to your
new web space, you need to use an FTP program
such as CuteFTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a reliable method
of transferring files (web pages and images) into your web space directory so
they can viewed by others on the WWW. In this help section an explanation is given
on how to upload files using CuteFTP.
When
CuteFTP loads, the FTP Site Manager (see image below) will pop-up. The Site
Manager displays sites that are available by default.
Next you need to add a web site to the Site Manager, then first click Add site,
you will be presented with the Add Host window. Here is a quick explanation
of how to set-up your own site for the site manager.
Site
Label - Enter the name for your site.
e.g www.mynewsite.com
Host Address - this is the FTP address of the web server.
e.g 123.456.789.0
User ID - your user identification for the site
(will be the same as your server login)
Password - your password to login
(will be the same as your server login)
Login Type - The default is Normal, we reccomend you keep it as
Normal
Transfer Type - The default is Auto-Detect, we recommend you use
Auto-Detect
Initial Remote Directory - Site admins use "../../web" without the
quotes.
Users leave this blank as the FTP program will always place you within your own
folder. |
Once this information is entered,
click OK and you will be returned to the Site Manager. The site you have just
created will now be displayed in the right hand window with the title that was
entered for 'Site Label'. Double click on the site's name and it will connect
you to the web server.
When uploading or downloading, the main interface is split into four sections
(see below). To upload, find the files you wish to upload using the the left hand
window (labelled upload from) and then find the directory you wish to upload
to using the right hand window (labelled upload to) Once the source (upload
from) and destination (Upload to) locations are correct, in the left
hand window, right-click the file you wish to upload and click upload fom the
pop-up menu which appears. The bottom section shows the status of the transfer
while the top section shows the status of the server. When you have finished uploading
click File and then Disconnect.
Tip: remember to call
the first or main page of your website index.html
