RaQ Overview
The Sun Cobalt RaQ server
revolutionised web hosting. The RaQ is a very small, rack mountable dedicated
web server. Whilst it's CPU size is small, it is extremely powerful due to the
fact it does not provide any video, sound or other interface operations, purely
web serving. Once the RaQ is switched on, and it's IP addresses have been entered
into the front panel, all further configuration is done through an easy-to-step-through
web interface. The user can be hosting and managing thier websites/ domain names
in minutes!
Models - The
most common RaQ's availables today are as follows: RaQ2, RaQ3, RaQ4 (including
a raid version) RaQ550 & RaQ XTR
Web serving - The Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliance offers integrated support
for HTTP/1.1, Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and Perl scripting.
Virtual domain support - The Sun Cobalt RaQ offers name-based virtual
domains (single IP address for multiple domains) or IP-based virtual domains (one
IP address for each domain).
Bandwidth Management - On a per-IP-address basis, traffic can be limited
to a pre-selected throughput rate.
SQL Database support - The server appliance integrates the InterBase open-source
database, a powerful, high-performance
SQL database designed for business-critical, network and Web-based applications
on the Sun RaQ server appliance.
Email services - Services include mail accounts for each domain, automatic
vacation responses, automatic forwarding and group mailing lists. These services
can be managed by the client, minimizing the burden on the email administrator.
Active Server Pages (ASP) and PHP support - Enables application and web
developers to build and maintain dynamic web applications with live database connectivity.
Development Environment - The Sun RaQ includes a full suite of standard
development tools, including C & C++ compilers, gdb debugger, libraries, X11
libraries & PostgreSQL DBMS. ISPs or their clients can use these tools to
build custom, value-added services.
